Project summary

The current situation of the representatives of the Russian ethnic minority in the Baltic States, i.e. Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, is rather complicated due to certain historical events (occupacy of the region by Russia, the formation and decline of the USSR, etc.). Although, in Lithuania intolerance and discrimination against the Russians is not harshly felt, in Latvia and Estonia even today this still causes a lot of scandals, quarrels, and riots. The project „Empowerment of yoth organisations of ethnic minorities“ aims to foster young representatives of the Russian minority to get involved in youth organisations, and to foster youth organisations of ethnic minorities to actively participate in the processes of the youth policy in the country of residence. As only by active participation young people will be able to express themselves, to conduct a successful social inclusion (without assimilation) and to influence the ongoing processes.

The project consists of several stages and embraces many activities: analysis of the youth situation; youth forums in each participating country on the national level, international youth forum, training course on the issue of self-identity, meetings with the representatives of governmental institutions responsible for the ethnic minorities and youth policy, preparation of recommendations and of the Guide for the youth organisations of ethnic minorities, etc. The project is coordinated by two youth organisations in every participating country; however, other youth organisations of ethnic minorities will be also invited to joint the activities.
